| Amber, an organic gemstone, is the fossilized sap of prehistoric trees. Amber with elegant and attractive colours is used for making jewellery and other ornamental objects since the time of Christ. Amber gives the body the ability to heal itself. It absorbs negative energy and turns it into positive energy. It purifies the body, improves its wearer's disposition and calms the nerves. The two main sources of amber in today's market are the Baltic states and the Dominican Republic. Amber from the Baltic states is older, and that from the Dominican Republic is more likely to have insect inclusions. Tahitian black pearls are some of the rarest, most valuable pearls available and have the distinction of being the world's only naturally black pearl. They come in a wide range of natural colours including black, aubergine, eggplant, peacock, silver, purple, pistachio, and more. Black Tahitian pearls are harvested in French Polynesia from the Pinctada Margaratifera oyster. This is one of the largest pearl-producing oysters in the world, only exceeded by the South Sea pearl-producing Pictada Maxima. Natural pearls are formed when an foreign object becomes trapped in the shell of an oyster or pearl and the animal surrounds the object with several mineral layers in order to protect its soft tissue. Most pearls sold today are farmed pearls, created by intentionally inserting small mother-of-pearl beads in the oyster's shell. The resulting pearls are harvested up to two years later. Pearls come in a range of pastel colours from cream to blue to pink, and irregularly shaped pearls are often called "baroque" pearls. Mabe pearls are hemispherical cultured pearls grown against the inside shell of an oyster rather than in the mollusk's body. Mabe pearls are typically used in settings such as that conceal their flat backs. Pearl is a smooth, lustrous, variously coloured deposit, chiefly calcium carbonate, formed around a grain of sand or other foreign matter in the shells of certain mollusks. Highly valued as the most famed gemstone, pearl is recognized for its beauty and elegance. Pearl is a pathological formation in pearl oyster, formed due to the entrance of a foreign particle into the gap between the body and the shell of the pearl oyster. The irritation caused by the foreign particle makes the oyster take out a secretion to cover the particle. This when dried, again creates irritation to the animal, so it covers it with its secretion again- the continuous process continues for 3 to 6 years to produce a precious pearl. Natural pearls have a surface appearance - which is lustrous and looks precious. When viewed under magnification it contains discontinuous wavy lines. They are used to make beautiful jewellery items, in decorative items and various other handicrafts. Pearl is found in the regions of Japan, China, Tahiti, Australia, Indonesia, Philippines, USA and Burma. Beautiful turquoise is a phosphate mineral popular all over the world. Mined since 5000 BC, it is one of the first gemstones known to be used by humans. Colour variation from sky-blue to light greens is affected by differing amounts of copper and iron, more copper giving a bluer colour and more iron a greener one. Beautiful light blue turquoise is mined in Northern Iran and other varieties occur in Mexico, the United States and elsewhere. Amethyst is an extremely sought-after gem which has been valued by many civilizations since antiquity. A variety of vitreous quartz, amethyst often forms dramatic prismatic crystals which are often formed into jewellery without being cut. Brazil and Uruguay are common sources of high quality amethyst. In the early Christian church, amethyst was believed to guard against intoxication, hence its derivation from the Greek "amethustos," meaning "not drunk." Amethyst is a vivid purple or violet form of transparent quartz used as a gemstone. The transparent purple quartz is the most popular quartz variety used in jewellery. It was named after the Greek mythological maiden who was turned to stone by the God Dionysus and is characterized by vivid colours and large clean crystals that make beautiful gems. Amethyst is a beautiful gemstone available in a wide variety of cut and uncut stones, calibrated sizes and shapes, including many fancy shapes. Because of the patchyness of the colour distribution in the crystals, amethyst is cut as brilliant round cuts to maximize the colour. Amethyst can occur as long prismatic crystals that have a six sided pyramid at either end or can form as druzes that are crystalline crusts that only show the pointed terminations. As a mineral specimen, amethyst is popular for its colour and nice crystal shapes that produce a handsome, purple, sparkling cluster. However, amethyst is not the same everywhere. Different localities can produce a unique amethyst to that particular region or even to that particular mine. The colour range varies from pale lilac to deep purple. It is mined in Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia and Argentina, Zambia, Namibia and other African countries. Very dark amethyst, mostly in small sizes, is also mined in Australia. Gem quality druzy is created when a layer of tiny quartz crystals forms over the top of another stone. Natural druzy crystals can be coloured themselves or take their colour from the underlying stone. The surface of a druzy is sometimes coated with gold or other substances for a dramatic effect. Titanium druzy has been treated with a thin layer of titanium to give it a beautiful colour and iridescent sheen. Agate is a striped chalcedony quartz that forms in layers and in a wide variety of colours and textures. An individual agate forms by filling a cavity in a "host" rock. As a result, agate often is found as a round nodule, with concentric bands. In ancient times it was said to quench thirst and guard against fever, and agate bowls were very popular in historical Europe. Topaz is a colourless, blue, yellow, brown, or pink aluminum silicate mineral, often found in association with granitic rocks and valued as a gemstone, especially in the brown and pink varieties. Under suitable conditions, topaz grows into enormous crystals. It derives its name from the sanskrit word tapas, meaning fire. According to another theory topaz derives its name from the Island of Topazos, in the Red Sea, where the Romans obtained a stone which they called by this name, but which was the modern chrysolite or peridot. A transparent stone with a vitreous luster, topaz's pure crystals are looks beautiful in exclusive jewellery items like: rings, bracelets, necklaces and pendants. Blue Topaz is available in a variety of shades, sizes and shapes. Red and intense pink are the most rare and most desirable colours for topaz. Topaz is a very hard gemstone but it can be split with a single blow, a trait it shares with diamond. Topaz stimulates endocrine system and is valuable in the treatment of hemorrhages. It balances emotions and gives feelings of joy and is referred to as the spiritual rejuvenation gemstone. The deposits of topaz are found in the regions of Russia, Siberia, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Africa and China, Japan, Pakistan, Myanmar, Nigeria, Australia, Mexico, and in the United States. The name "jade" is commonly used for two different silicate minerals, jadeite and nephrite. Prized for its colour and hardness, jade has been used since ancient times for practical and decorative purposes. In China, it was once considered more valuable than gold and silver and was used for axe heads and other weapons. Ancient natives of Central America, New Zealand, and Egypt also prized jade as a beautiful and symbolic gemstone. Royal blue lapis lazuli comes from the silicate mineral lazurite. Polished stones often show gorgeous veins of white calcite and flecks of golden pyrite. Used by ancient civilizations from China to Sumeria, lapis lazuli inlay adorned the mask of ancient Egypt's King Tutankhamun. Lapis lazuli is somewhat rare and much of the deepest blue stone is mined in Afghanistan. Denim lapis has a lighter blue colour and Aztec lapis features dramatic veining of black and brown minerals. Lapis lazuli is an opaque to translucent blue, violet-blue, or greenish-blue semi precious gemstone composed mainly of lazurite and calcite. It is often dyed to deepen and improve its colour and contains the minerals calcite (which decreases its value), pyrite (which can increase its value), and sodalite. The rich blue colour is due to the sulfur inherent in the structure of lazurite. Lazurite is resistant to atmospheric gases, is lightfast and possesses good hiding power. It is durable with all other permanent pigments. Lapis Lazuli is said to cleanse the mental body while releasing old karmic patterns. Being a spiritual stone, it allows spiritual energy to be absorbed in the aura. Lazurite is currently extracted from two regions of the former Soviet Union: Malobystrinskoye deposit of the south Baikal region, and the Lyadzhvardarinskoye deposit in the southwestern Pamirs Mountains. Other significant deposits of lazurite are found at Ovalle, Cordillera, Chile; Mt. Vesuvius, Italy; Cascade Canyon, San Bernardino Mountains and Ontario Peak, California, Colorado, U.S.A. Used since ancient times for a variety of purposes, beautiful quartz is a versatile gem that occurs in many colours. Jasper is a dark green, semi-translucent to opaque form of semiprecious chalcedony. It derives its name from the Greek iaspis. It owes its colour to admixed hematite, but when it occurs with clay admixed, the colour is a yellowish white or gray, or with goethite, a brown or yellow. Jasper is opaque, fine-grained or dense variety of the silica mineral chert. Jasper, long used for jewellery and ornamentation, has a dull luster but takes a fine polish. Its hardness and other physical properties are those of quartz. It is used in many forms of jewellery and lapidary arts. Jasper was known as the great rain-bringer in the fourth century. Jasper is one of the gemstones, that used in commesso, also called florentine mosaic. Commesso is a technique of fashioning pictures with thin, cut-to-shape pieces of brightly coloured, semiprecious stones. It can also be worn as beads or cabochon jewellery. Jasper strengthens the stomach and is believed to cure gynecological problems. It is also thought to drive away evil spirits and protect against snake and spider bites. Landscape jasper, which seems to show miniature earth scenes, and ocean jasper with its characteristic green swirls are both popular. Jasper was used for decorative and medicinal in many ancient cultures and the Babylonians believed it was beneficial to women's health. Jasper is commonly found in the regions of North Africa, Sicily, France, India, Venezula and Germany, USA etc. Peridot, a volcanic gemstone is a yellow-green variety of olivine. It is composed of silica, magnesia and iron. It is the traditional birthstone of August. The gemstone is formed of olivine, a silicate found in igneous rocks and a major constituent of the Earth's upper mantle. The word peridot is derived from French word peritot meaning unclear. It also believed to take its name from the Arabic word faridat meaning gem. Small crystallites of peridot are often found in the basalt rocks created by volcanoes and have been found in iron-nickel meteorites called pallasites. It is found in the USA, Myanmar, Egypt, China, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Faceted peridot is highly prized gemstone and is also used as birthstone and in making jewellery. It is used both as a faceted and tumbled gem. The faceted stones are used in rings, earrings, pendants, bracelets, and as accent stones. The tumbled gems are embedded in baroque jewellery, drilled and strung as beads, used in mosaics and in producing gem trees. Spring green peridot is the gem variety of ovaline, a silicate mineral thought to be common in the upper mantle of Earth's crust. Peridot-grade ovaline is most abundant in Pakistan and other dry areas. Used as early as 1580 BC in Egypt, peridot is held as a symbol of the Sun. Moonstone owes its name to the white, almost magical shimmer that resembles moonshine. Blue-whitish light glides over the surface when the stone is cut en cabochon. Gemologists call this phenomena adularescence, which originates from the interior structure of the gemstone in scales or lamellas. Incoming rays of light are refracted inside the stone and scattered, creating a unique play of light, which makes moonstone so special and coveted. Moonstone is the most well known potassium feldspar of the orthoclase species. A combination of orthoclase and albite arranged in layers cause the lovely sheen. Rainbow moonstone is another excellent variety of moonstone that adds multicolour to its mystical sheen and glow. Deposits were found in the late 1980s in India though supplies are not large. Moonstone is fairly soft, 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale, and sensitive to pressure. In Arab countries women reportedly sew moonstone into their garments, because it's considered a symbol of fertility. Moonstone was used in jewellery from 100 AD in Rome and even earlier in Asia. Ruby is a red gemstone. Rubies can vary from a light pink to a blood red, a variety of the mineral corundum (aluminium oxide). The colour is caused mainly by chromium. Its name comes from ruber, Latin for red. Natural rubies are exceptionally rare, but synthetic rubies (sometimes called created ruby) can be manufactured fairly cheaply. Other varieties of gem-quality corundum are called sapphires. It is considered one of the four precious gems, together with the sapphire, the emerald and the diamond. Rubies are mined in Africa, Asia, Australia, Greenland, Madagascar and North Carolina. They are most often found in Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka, Kenya, Madagascar, and Cambodia, but they have also been found in the U.S. states of Montana, North Carolina and South Carolina. The Mogok Valley in Upper Myanmar has produced some of the finest rubies but, in recent years, very few good rubies have been found there. The unique colour in Myanmar (Burmese) rubies is described as pigeon’s blood. They are known in the trade as “Mogok” rubies. In central Myanmar the area of Mong Hsu also produces rubies. The latest ruby deposit to be found in Myanmar is situated in Nam Ya. In 2002 rubies were found in the Waseges River area of Kenya. Sometimes spinels are found along with rubies in the same rocks and are mistaken for rubies. However, fine red spinels may approach the average ruby in value. Rubies have a hardness of 9.0 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Among the natural gems only diamond is harder. Labradorite is a variety of plagioclase feldspar found in igneous rocks and characterized by brilliant colours in some specimens. It is a member of the plagioclase series of minerals defined at approximately the 50% to 70% CaAl2 Si2 O8 . All members of the plagioclase series usually display lamellar twinning called Albite Twinning. Labradorite is usually cut with a flat surface in order to highlight the flashes of colour. Labradorite is said to heal mental confusion and indecision allowing to understand ourselves on a deeper level. It is a solar plexus stone and strengthens the immune system. A beautiful mineral, labradorite can produce a colourful play of light across cleavage planes and in sliced sections called labradorescence that ranges from the blues and violets through greens, yellows and oranges. The gemstone is found in the regions of Newfoundland, Canada, Ukraine, Ural mountains, and the USA. Finish labradorite is also known as spectrolite. The major sources include: Finland, Canada and the USA. Malachite is a shining copper ore with swirling islands of rich green colour. Used since ancient Egyptian times as pigment for cosmetics, dyes and paints, malachite's primary use today is still ornamental. Popularized in modern times in 19th century Europe, it was worn as protection against the "evil eye." Much of today's fine malachite is mined in the Congo. Onyx is a chalcedony quartz with a fine texture and black colour. Some onyx also displays white bands or ribbons against a black background. Onyx was popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans. The name comes from the Greek word "onux," which means fingernail. The myth is that Cupid cut the divine fingernails of Venus one day while she was sleeping. He discarded the clippings and the fates turned them to stone so that no part of Venus would ever be lost. In Greek times, almost all colours of chalcedony from fingernail white to dark brown and black were called onyx. Later, the Romans narrowed the term to refer to black and dark brown colours only. Citrine is quartz generally occurring in a golden colour. Citrine occurs naturally in Scotland and in the Ural Mountains of Russia. Much citrine available today is actually smoky quartz or amethyst that has been heat-treated to turn it the characteristic citrine colour. Tiger's eye or crocidolite cat's-eye is semi precious stone with a rich yellow and golden brown stripes. It is quartz that contains oriented fibres of crocidolite replaced by silica. It displays chatoyancy or a vertical luminescent band like that of a cat's eye. It acquires fine golden lustre when polished. Resembling the eye of a tiger, this semi precious stone thus, received its name. It is the anniversary gemstone for the 9th year of marriage. Tiger-Eye is widely used in making jewellery and beads with its peculiarity showing out best. It is found in the regions of South Africa. The best stones come from Griqualand West. As per the legend, Roman soldiers wore tiger's-eye for protection in battle and was thought to be all seeing due to its appearance. It can be worn to strengthen convictions and acquire courage and confidence. Relieving high blood pressure, the gemstone is used for focusing the mind. This very warm stone is beneficial for the weak and sick. Garnet is any of several common, widespread aluminum or calcium silicate minerals occurring in two internally isomorphic series, generally crystallized. They are often embedded in igneous and metamorphic rocks and used both as gemstones and abrasives. Garnets are a group of common silicate minerals that have similar crystal structures and chemical compositions. It derives its name from ancient Greeks as colour reminded them of the pomegranate seed or granatum. It is renowned ancient gem, treasured for thousands years. Garnets are actually one of the largest families of gemstones. Garnet is used create beautiful garnet beads, bracelets and other jewellery items like: in rings, pendants, necklaces and bracelets. They are also used widely as abrasives. The hardness of garnets and their sharp fracture make them suitable as abrasives for wood, leather, glass, metals, and plastics. Garnet is said to stimulate bloodstream & pituitary gland and combats depression and lethargy. It should be carried close to the body and possesses balancing and peaceful energy. Garnet symbolizes fire, faith, courage, truth, grace, compassion, constancy and fidelity. It is found in the regions of Kenya, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Brazil, India, Madagascar, Canada, USA, Czech Republic and Spain. Deep red garnet is derived from a number of minerals, including pyrope and almandine. Popularized in Bohemia in the Czech Republic, garnet has been used in decoration and jewellery across Europe for many years. Its colour is generally a dark burgundy, sometimes with a hint of orange, pink, or purple. Carnelian is a translucent red or orange variety of chalcedony, sometimes banded red and orange like an agate. Once believed to benefit the wearer's health and love life. Most carnelian comes from Brazil, India, Siberia, and Germany. Agate is a fine-grained, fibrous variety of chalcedony with coloured bands or irregular clouding. Each individual agate forms by filling a cavity in host rock. It is found in concentric layers in a wide variety of colours and textures in various colours, forms that range from being transparent to opaque. It comprises of intricate patterns varieties like: blue lace, green, Indian, Kentucky and moss. In the earlier times, Agate was given high value as a talisman or amulet. It was said to quench thirst and protect from fevers. It is believed that Agate renders the wearer invisible and due to its strength and durability, it is used for making ornaments or for astrological purposes. Being a cooling stone, Agate is said to cure insomnia, protect against danger, promote strength and healing and ensures a healthy life. Emerald (Be3Al2(SiO3)6) is a variety of the mineral beryl, coloured green by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes iron. It is highly prized as a gemstone and by weight is the most valuable gemstone in the world, although it is often made less so by inclusions, which all emeralds have to some degree. Beryl has a hardness of 7.5 on the 10 point Mohs scale of hardness. However, this Mohs rating can decrease, depending on the number and severity of inclusions in a particular stone. Most emeralds are oiled as part of the post lapidary process. The amount of oil entering an emerald microfissure is roughly equivalent to the size of a period (full stop) in print. Emeralds come in many shades of green and bluish green. There is a wide spectrum of clarity, along with various numbers of inclusions. Most emeralds are highly included, so it is quite rare to find an emerald with only minor inclusions. Because of the usual inclusions, the toughness (resistance to breakage) is classified as generally poor. Emeralds in antiquity were mined by the Egyptians and in Austria, as well as Swat in northern Pakistan. A rare type of emerald known as a trapiche emerald is occasionally found in the mines of Colombia. A trapiche emerald exhibits a star pattern; it has raylike spokes of dark carbon impurities that give the emerald a six-pointed radial pattern. It is named for the trapiche, a grinding wheel used to process sugarcane in the region. Colombian emeralds are generally the most prized due to their transparency and fire. Some of the most rare emeralds come from three main emerald mining areas in Colombia: Muzo, Coscuez, and Chivor. Fine emeralds are also found in other countries, such as Zambia, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and Russia. The value of an emerald depends on cut, colour, clarity, and carat. The characteristics of Colombian emeralds set the highest standards of quality. Precious coral or red coral is the common name given to Corallium rubrum and several related species of marine coral. The distinguishing characteristic of precious corals is their durable and intensely coloured red skeleton, which is used for making jewellery. Red corals grow on rocky seabottom with low sedimentation, typically in dark environments--either in the depths or in dark caverns or crevices. The original species, C. rubrum, is found mainly in the Mediterranean Sea. It grows at depths from 10 to 300 m, although the shallower of these habitats have been largely depleted by harvesting. The same species is also found at Atlantic sites near the Strait of Gibraltar and at the Cape Verde Islands. Other Corallium species are native to the western Pacific, notably around Japan (Corallium japonicum) and Taiwan; these occur at depths of 350 to 1500 m in areas with strong currents. The organic gem coral is the skeleton of coral polyps which live in the sea. Dull when harvested, it can be polished to a high shine. Red and pink varieties are generally found in warm Asian and Mediterranean waters. Coral has been carved in China for 2,000 years and was used medicinally and as an amulet in other ancient cultures. Sea bamboo is a vivid red gem from the coral family. Fossilized coral dates from the Ordovician period of prehistory and displays beautiful colours and a gorgeous starburst pattern when polished. Goldstone is a type of glass made with copper or copper salts in the presence of a reducing flame. Under normal oxidative conditions, copper ions meld into the silica to produce transparent bluish-green glass; when the reduced goldstone melt cools, the copper remains in atomic isolation and precipitates into small crystalline clusters. The finished product can take a smooth polish and be carved into beads, figurines, or other artifacts suitable for semiprecious stone, and in fact goldstone is often mistaken or misrepresented as a natural material. The most common form of goldstone gives the illusion of being reddish-brown, although in fact that colour comes from the copper crystals and the glass itself is colourless. Some goldstone variants have an intensely-coloured glass matrix-- usually blue or violet, more rarely green-- and a more silvery appearance to the suspended crystals, whose colour may be partially masked by the glass or which may be based on different metals than copper (perhaps cobalt, manganese, or chromium). The manufacturing process for goldstone was discovered in seventeenth-century Venice by the Miotti family, which was granted an exclusive license by the Doge. Persistent folklore attributes the discovery and secret of goldstone to an unnamed Italian monastic order, giving rise to the alternate name monks gold or monkstone. Another name, stellaria, is based on the starry internal reflections. Curiously, goldstone is one of the few cases where a synthetic simulant provided the eponym for the similar natural stone. The original Italian name for goldstone is avventurina or some similar word or phrase indicating its accidental discovery, hence the mineral name aventurine for forms of feldspar or quartz with mica inclusions that give a similar glittering appearance. Yet another name for goldstone is aventurine glass, but this should be discouraged to avoid confusion with the minerals. |
